In September 2020, Zeofixer®, a silicon-based phosphorus sequestering agent, was applied to a water body in Shanghai to reduce the phosphate concentration in the overlying water and permanently “cap” the sediment.
Location of the Pilot Test
The water body for this pilot test is located in the agriculture institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Minhang District, Shanghai, China. The water surface area is about 0.2ha, the water depth is between 1.5m and 2.2m, and the sediment thickness is around 1m.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of the famous institutions of higher learning with the longest history and reputation at home and abroad. It is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly built with Shanghai Municipality. After 125 years of unremitting efforts, Shanghai Jiao Tong University has become a domestic first-class and internationally renowned university, and further defined the vision on constructing a “comprehensive, innovative and international” world-class university.
The On-Site Trial
The pre-treatment total phosphorus concentrations in the water body were 1.36-1.80mg/L, and the concentration of PO4-P was 1.07-1.20mg/L.
In September 2020, Zeofixer®, a silicon-based phosphorus sequestering agent, was applied to the water body to reduce the phosphate concentration in the overlying water and permanently “cap” the sediment.
Test Result
Sixty days after the application, the total phosphorus concentration in the overlying water had stabilized at 0.03mg/L (Removal Rate: 98.3%), and the phosphate concentration had stabilized at 0.02mg/L (Removal Rate: 98.3%).
